How is Bing doing?

Tag: Utah SEO,Utah Web Designryan @ 3:01 pm

First off, let me applaud Microsoft for finally getting a good name for their search engine. Back in July I ran the numbers on a few of our sites and Bing was sitting at about 7% of the total search engine traffic. This time I ran the numbers on a sample of 5 of our SEO sites (to save time) that have been around awhile. By around awhile, I am talking at least 4+ years old.

  • 15356 hits (5 sites/30 days of traffic)
  • 12,211 from google. 79.5%
  • 1,730 from yahoo. 11.3%
  • 1,415 from bing. 9.2%

Keep in mind this is by no means scientific, but rather a quick look at a few of our sites. With our sites, Bing looks like it improved. However, it appears to have taken hits from Yahoo and not Google. And since Yahoo and Bing appear to be merging at some point, success needs to be measured by taking hits from Google.

Google vs. the others

Tag: Utah SEOryan @ 1:52 pm

We know google owns the search market, but we wanted to find out just how much they own for ourselves. We took a random sample of 30 or so sites we are running analytics on in various industries and the outcome was a little more google heavy than anticipated.

Total Search Engine Traffic: 31,933 hits (last 30 days)
Google: 78%
Yahoo: 15%
Bing: 7%

SEO – Keyword Variation

Tag: Utah SEOryan @ 1:10 pm

Ranking for keywords is becoming an exact science. We have a client that has been in the Folding Table industry for 20+ years. Subsequently they have been in the top 10 Google results for “folding tables” for quite some time. While they have had great position for “folding tables,” they were hanging back on the 5th-6th page for “folding table.” After some research, we discovered the content and link structure was 80% +/- geared towards the plural version of folding table.

Check out the results of a little re-organization below:

Turning Point Centers – Turns to the front page…

Tag: Utah SEOryan @ 10:52 am

…where they belong. Turning Point Centers and Red Olive SEO teamed up to tackle the search engines for Utah Drug Rehab rankings. After a few short months of focusing on content and code, together we were able to surpass many of the road blocks to top rankings.

utah-seo

The top 10 spots for many of these key-terms are taken up by “drug rehab directories.” Many times the link back these directories typically require to be listed on their sites can be worth more than the link they give you. That is part of the reason they are usually in the top 10 and hard to topple. Think about it… if you have 30 pages full of drug rehab related content, which starts to make you an authority on drug rehab information, and you pass a link to a directory they receive a big boost in link juice. Now if that directory merely has a bunch of links on it, they appear to be an authority on links, not necessarily drug rehab. So you are trading 30 pages of content and information for a link from a site with a couple pages of links on them. I am not saying directories are bad, because they are helpful when used correctly, simply be careful when link trading. Remember, you can’t go wrong with content. Content is King.

Thanks Turning Point for letting us work on this project.

Parasitic advertising with Google Adwords – Search Marketing Ethics

Tag: Utah SEOMatthew Moeller @ 4:52 pm

Every so often we hit Google and check our name to find individuals trading on our mark,  and noticed an interesting twist on the theme.   A  local competitor of ours apparently thinks highly enough of us to run a Google PPC campaign on Red Olive .  Keep up the good work guys.

Apparently you can also bid on RED OLIVE on eBay, says they have a “Huge Selection”, god bless ebay!

Google Adwords Back with Actual Keyphrase Popularity Figures

Tag: Utah SEOAaron @ 9:17 am

Finding out what keywords are being used on any search engine at any given time has proven to be sometimes troublesome for SEOs using free tools online. But now, back by popular demand, the Google Adwords keyword research tool has something more to offer than a lame green bar — actual volume numbers.

So for those who are unfamiliar with what I’m referring to, Google Adwords a while ago decided to drop search volume amounts for its keyword terms where you only had a secondary indicator of how popular the phrase was by the amount of competitors bidding. For instance if I wanted to see how often the term “gourmet chocolate” was searched for, all I knew was there was a green indicator bar under Advertiser Competition that was completely full of green (as appossed to a bar that was an empty box meaning there was little to no competition). And it gave you only only the estimated cost per click.

It left all of us scratching our heads and saying where the h*ll is an actual search volume number. I can’t work with this, it’s like saying “how big is a bag,” it was all relative.

But now there are real quantitative numbers to measure with. So any PPCer or SEO can accurately gauge what they or their client is up against with. And to top it off they have the average month volume and annual search average amounts per term– very nice.

And I know, for all of you …in the know, I’m a little late with this, but I wanted to spread the word to those yet to stumble up it. Anyway, again it’s great to see Google came to their senses and provided yet another awesome free tool. With all that Ad revenue they pull in, I suppose they can throw us a bone from time to time.
